TCU announces multi-million dollar gift for three important academic programs

Texas Christian University announced today that it has received a gift of $8 million from Paul and Judy Andrews of Fort Worth to benefit the Institute of Mathematics, Science & Technology Education, TCU Honors Program and the library.
"This University plays a vital role in our community and we are proud to support these important programs at TCU," said Paul and Judy Andrews. "We also want to honor our good friend John Roach who has supported TCU in countless ways for many years."
The gift will be used as follows:
$5 million - Institute of Mathematics, Science & Technology Education
The Andrews’ gift will support the Institute of Mathematics, Science & Technology Education in TCU’s College of Education to help address the national problem of deficiency in mathematics and science education in K-12 schools. In recognition of the gift, the Institute has been named the Andrews Institute of Mathematics, Science & Technology Education.
The Andrews Institute endowment will foster the further outreach of the programs and projects and provide scholarships for students studying education in mathematics and science. The largest portion of the gift will be used for scholarships in doctoral, master’s and baccalaureate areas. Doctoral students in particular are critical to the success of the Institute because they run the Pupils Reviving Interest in Science and Mathematics (PRISM) and Teacher Collaboration for Updating Science, Technology and Mathematics Proficiency (TCU-STAMP) outreach programs.
$2.5 million – TCU Honors Program
The Andrews’ gift will also support the Honors Program by establishing the John V. Roach Honors College, which will open in the fall of 2009. Their gift honors longtime Fort Worth civic leader and businessman John V. Roach. It will be used for the enhancement of the living/learning community model, facility upgrades, faculty stipends, student scholarship support – including study abroad stipends – and the many other costs associated with an endeavor of this magnitude.
The creation of an Honors College at TCU will increase the prestige of honors studies, and allow for new program initiatives, particularly in the areas of student recruitment and the creation of community. The College will offer extensive advising, personal interaction with faculty, multiple opportunities for study abroad, and the option to live in an Honors-sponsored living/learning community that encourages the free and open discussion of world events and issues.
$500,000 – TCU Library
The remaining portion of the Andrews’ gift will be used to support the Mary Couts Burnett Library through enhancements and additional resources.
