The board of trustees at Brite Divinity School at TCUwill gather Oct. 1-3 for a retreat nearly 500 miles away in Marfa. The group is, in essence, “going home” to reconnect with their institutional roots.
Luke Brite was a pioneer Presidio County rancher and philanthropist. After marriage to Eddie McMinn Anderson, the couple ranched at Capote Peak for six years, then moved to Marfa in 1902. While developing a 125,000-acre ranch and breeding champion Herefords, the Brites became devoted members of First Christian Church in Marfa. In 1911 and 1914, the couple gave $60,000 to establish the Chair of English Bible and to build the Bible College building at TCU. Luke Brite became chairman of the board of trustees of Brite College of the Bible at TCU in 1926.
After his death in 1941, Eddie Brite served the remainder of his term as a trustee of Brite College, now known as Brite Divinity School.
For most of Brite’s current trustees, this fall meeting will be their first visit to this scenic area of West Texas where descendents of Luke and Eddie Brite still live, work and support the First Christian Church of Marfa.
