CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta will speak at TCU on Oct. 10

CNN senior medical correspondent and pop culture icon Dr. Sanjay Gupta
will be the featured speaker at this year’s Fogelson Honors Forum at 8
p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 in Ed Landreth Auditorium on the TCU campus. Dr.
Gupta, whose on-air reports have included Hurricane Katrina, the South
Asian tsunami, bird flu and battlefield medicine breakthroughs, will
address the impact of today’s near instant access to on-scene media.

Dr. Gupta, a practicing neurosurgeon in Atlanta hospitals and an
assistant professor of neurosurgery at Emory University School of
Medicine there, plays an integral role in CNN’s medical coverage which
includes daily packages, a half-hour weekend show and live reports of
breaking medical news. He joined CNN in 2001 and became part of
the network team covering the Sept. 11 attacks and the anthrax scare
that followed.
He continued to raise his on-air profile with coverage of
battlefield medicine in Iraq and Kuwait, the AIDS pandemic and the
December 2004 tsunami that took more than 155,000 lives in South Asia.
In 2003, he was named one of People magazine’s “sexiest men alive,” and a “pop culture icon” by USA Today.
The Fogelson Honors Forum, now in its ninth year, is made possible by a
$1 million gift from the estates of Buddy Fogelson and his wife, the
actress Greer Garson. A successful Texas oilman and rancher, Buddy
Fogelson attended TCU in 1919 and 1920. Previous lecturers in this
series have included economist/actor Ben Stein, political insiders
James Carville and Mary Matalin, statesman George Mitchell, historians
David McCullough and Doris Kearns Goodwin.
The TCU Honors Program, with admission by invitation, offers a
challenging interdisciplinary curriculum in a wide variety of classes,
as well as opportunities for traditional and experiential learning and
co-curricular activities.
