Schieffer School of Journalism instructor to serve on national media jury
Fort Worth, TX
10/30/2006
John Miller, professional-in-residence in broadcast journalism at TCU’s
Schieffer School of Journalism, has been appointed to serve on the
nine-member jury for the Alfred I. duPont Columbia University Awards.
The duPont Awards are supervised by Columbia University and are given
to honor the best in television and radio journalism.
Miller's news staff at WFAA-TV Dallas-Fort Worth was twice honored with
duPonts, considered broadcast journalism's highest and most prestigious
award, in 1991 and 1996, when Miller served as news director
there. As a past winner, he accepted Columbia's invitation to
become a screener for the awards, and was asked to begin serving on the
main awards jury this year.
Miller joined the fulltime faculty at TCU in 2003 after a 35-year
career in local television news in the Dallas Fort Worth market,
including news directorships at WFAA and KTVT. He is the faculty
adviser for TCU News Now, the Schieffer School's weekly television
newscast.
The 2005-2006 du Pont awards will be presented Jan. 17 in a nationally
televised ceremony at the Low Library at Columbia in New York
City. Last year's awards ceremony was hosted by Bob Schieffer.
"Two of my most cherished possessions are WFAA's two duPont award
certificates hanging on my wall at TCU," Miller said. "To be asked to
serve on the jury that decides future winners is humbling beyond
belief."
Other current duPont jurors include John Martin, former correspondent
for ABC News, Roberta Baskin, executive director of the Center for
Public Integrity and a former network correspondent for CBS and ABC,
and Bill Wheatley, former president of NBC News.
Also serving on the jury is Cinny Kennard, manager of NPR's West Coast
Production Center, and a former reporter for Miller at WFAA.
Member of the jury serve three-year terms, renewable for up to nine years.
